今日は、私が額やマットをどうやって選んでいるかについてお話ししたいと思います。
といっても、実は、最近になるまで額装をしたことはありませんでした。
数年前、海外で気になった油彩の作品があり購入しました。キャンバスを丸めて持ち帰ったのですが、その作品を部屋に飾ろうと思い、初めて「額装 京都」とネット検索しました。
その時お願いしたのが京都 河原町五条の画箋堂さんで、その後ずっと、私の作品の額装もお願いしています。当時は自分の絵を額装して展示・販売するなんて考えてもいませんでしたが!
私にとって額装は最後の仕上げです。額装があって始めて作品が完成する、と言ってもいいほどです。
額は前もって気に入ったものがあった時に購入しておくこともありますし、絵を描いてからそれに合う額を選ぶこともあります。
今の好みとしては、少し変わったデザインのものが気になります。
色や形が個性的なものがあると、手元に置いておき、それに合う猫さんはどんなだろうと想像するのも楽しいです。
マットは色を決め込んでお店に行くこともありますが、大体は、お店のスタッフの方といろいろ当ててみて相談しながら決めることが多いです。
ただの白というよりはカラーだったり、断面にカラーが入っているものを選ぶことが多いです。
昨年のgallery green&gardenでの展示では、テーマをシェイクスピアの十二夜にしたので、マットは主人公のviolaにちなんで、violet菫色系でまとめました。というか、結果的にそのようになりました。
スタッフの方にViolaのことは伝えず、私も菫色に揃えるつもりもなくマットの相談をしていたのですが、色々と見本をあてているうちに３点とも菫色系がしっくりきて、そう決まりました。制作途中になんとなく予期して色の調整をしていたのかもしれません。

Today I would like to talk about how I choose frames and mats for my illustrations.
However, I had actually never framed anything until recently.
A few years ago, I bought an oil painting overseas. I rolled up the canvas and brought it home. I wanted to hang it in my room, so for the first time I searched online for "framing, Kyoto".
Since then, I've asked Gwasendo in Kawaramachi-Gojo, Kyoto to frame my work for me. At the time, I had no idea that my paintings would be framed for exhibition and sale!
For me, framing is the final touch. I would go so far as to say that a work is complete only when it is framed.
Sometimes I buy a frame in advance when I find one I like, and other times I choose a frame to match the painting after I have painted it.
My current preference for frames is for something a little different in design.
If there is something unique in color or shape, I enjoy keeping it close at hand and imagining what kind of cat would go with it.
Sometimes I go for framing with a color in mind for a mat, but most of the time I decide after consulting with the staff at the store after trying some on.
I tend to choose mats that are colored or have color in the cross section rather than just white.
For last year's exhibition at gallery green&garden, the theme was Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, so the mats were in the violet-violet color family, after the main character, VIOLA.
I didn't tell the staff about Viola, and I didn't intend to use violet for the mats, but as we looked at various samples, we felt that violet was the right color for all three mats, and so we decided on that. Perhaps I had somehow anticipated and adjusted the colors during the production process.
Isn't it such a coincidence?
Framing is a lot of fun because the mat and the frame give a very different impression on my work.
Each time I make a piece, I put a lot of thought into it, so please enjoy the matching of the frame, mat, and illustration.
